Stainless steel plates, wire, bars and rods are supplied in a broad range of standard configurations, standards and grades. All BS 970 requirements refer to bright cold finished bars unless otherwise stated. Stainless steel is available in non-heat treated and heat treated grades. These grades are defined in BS 449 and BS 915. The relevant sections of BS 970 for bar products are as follows: Nomenclature The sections in this specification contain descriptions of the relevant requirements in English, together with a corresponding translation into Japanese. In the same section, where the English description contains a general statement of a requirement applicable to all the grades, this applies to all the corresponding grades. Bars must comply with one of these sections. Section 7-1: Straight bars Frequently occurring configurations Table 7.1(a) shows configurations of straight bars that are of frequent occurrence in this specification. In each configuration, it is assumed that the bars have a cross-sectional area, b, and a length, L, measured parallel to the direction of the required straightness. The b/L ratio is the cross-sectional area divided by the length. Figure 7.1: Dimensions of a straight bar.
